TrekWrap - Utility Scarf Pocket System | Prototype
A functional soft-goods pocket system exploring materials, construction, and on-body usability through prototyping and contextual testing.
Jump to section:
Design Opportunity
Create an ergonomic pocket system that puts the user first, allowing them to carry their essential belongings and keep their hands warm without compromising the garment’s form.
User / Context
Wide Target Audience 20-70yo
Students
Walkers / Hikers
Those living in colder climates
Those needing extra pocket space
Those who don’t carry a bag
Concept exploration
Quick Ideation
30 second “lightning round” ideation - exploring alternative pocket concepts
“No bad ideas” - stage
Early Ideation
Quick sketches of rough ideas sparked later concept - trust in design process
Early Concept
Initial concept - focus on utility and reinventing a classic garment (outdoor-wear “puffer jacket” style)
Thinking about “essential” and common belongings to include - what do people carry with them?
Decision Making
Initial Pattern Making
Rough outline of garment construction - focus on estimated pocket sizing for average belonging dimensions, and rounded pocket detailing.
Simplicity, form, and utility.
Paper Prototype
Light user testing of the prototype gave an idea of what changes to make:
too long - hands “reaching” for pockets
pocket size must be scaled up to accommodate bulk of items
Pocket Example
Communication of pocket functions using earbuds, keys, and a mobile phone.
Muslin Prototype
Second round of prototyping after exploring several iterations of the garment’s pattern
focus on construction - creating a sturdy yet aesthetically pleasing design
user testing - successful length and pocket sizing - ready for next stages
Final Outcome
Utility
The final scarf includes
3 utility pockets
Magnetic pocket closes for security
2 hand-warming pockets
Insulation for warmth
White bias trim as a signifier of pocket openings
Soft-on-the-skin fabric that doesn’t irritate
Hand-Sewn Garment
Close-up look at the detailing and construction of the garment.
Final Prototype
The resulting product is a timeless scarf with modern features. A thoughtful reinvention of a classic garment, with attention to detail and focused on fulfilling the wearer’s needs.
Project Reflection
What I learned
I enjoy working with soft goods - this project presented a new and interesting challenge
The process of creating and editing a garment pattern
Allow more fabric for pockets than you think (item bulk)
Hand-sewing techniques
Design process - early ideas don’t need to be perfect, rough ideation is an important step in strong design
Project Constraints
3 week time frame - alongside other projects
No access to a sewing machine
Materials not provided
If I had more time, I would…
Create a higher-fidelity prototype with a sewing machine & further construction edits
Create an in-depth garment construction plan (hand-sewing took up most of the time in this project)
Dive deeper into material & insulation possibilities that could increase functionality
Continue to gather user feedback to inform my iterations
